My son took his time share vacation at Block Island, RI last week.  If you’re from New England you know that we have had a very, very hot, dry summer. Unfortunately the rain and wind moved in on Sunday morning and continued until late Wednesday. We arrived Thursday night after they had finally made it to the beach!

We all tromped down to the beach around 10:30 while the men fished and we chatted as the full moon lit the water. It was an incredible moon and one I’ll remember for a while. Friday we kayaked around the salt pond and spent some time on the beach. I always find my imagination runs wild and I concoct life stories for those around us.  I was entertained by the antics of the extended family camped out in front of us. The in- laws, the out-laws, the quiet woman, the chatty woman, the man who hid out in the tent……….

Friday we hiked the dunes and biked to the outer lighthouse. We stopped our bikes in the middle of the biggest hill on the island and walked the sacred labyrinth someone had carefully constructed. The view was incredible. We had a 360 view of the island, the water and Point Judith twelve miles away. We had a quiet interlude of walking with the most awesome view.  I sent my silent gratitude to whoever constructed and maintains that tiny piece of land.

The, off to the crest of the hill with much huffing and puffing. We enjoyed the rest of our day practicing for retirement – sitting and relaxing!

Although I’m sure most of us mind the heat, I apologize to all those who won’t read this who must work in the heat. I realized I need to say a silent thank you to the road crews and the police and fire and the roofers and the construction crews and those who must work in places without a/c- the laundry, the day care, the camp counselors and all those other people who keep our world spinning regardless of the weather.

…and now, I’ll be quiet, fight off the fruit flies  and finish chopping the fresh tomatoes for pasta sauce.

I am literally melting away. My shirt is stuck to me, all over, my toes are perspiring and my bandana is dripping sweat into my eyes. It is 8:00 pm and the heat is a blanket.  The air is still and there is no breeze- warm or cool – except the air moving slightly from the fan.

It rained for a bit last night but everything is dry again now- except me.

This afternoon I picked blueberries today at a local farm. many of the berries  are dried up and puckered and somewhat bitter. It was hard picking. We do love the fresh berries, though and eat them out of hand. I also spent an extravagant amount on fresh peaches. we bought a few last week and they were sweet and juicy. I cut some up in my cottage cheese with some blueberries and cinnamon and suddenly found a powerful urge for peach pie!  or homemade peach ice cream! but not tonight!

I’m loving my new polish! It’s a little gleamy and not what I expected. I thought it would be more opaque, but i guess it’s better to be subtle when green is the color!

Today I found that our handwriting program sent 40 copies of the teachers edition because someone ( I won’t tell!) put down the wrong code. I boxed them up and now  we will have pay postage to send them back and postage on the kids versions of the book. Oh well, we all make mistakes. It’s like the one ceiling hook I opened from our school supply company. I wanted 10 but the zero was omitted. I’ll hang a lot up with that singleton!

Now, back to the schedules!

This morning I stopped by the Christmas Tree Shop to look for frames. One hour and $100 later I had a full cart- but no frames!

I ended up with a bag of disposable bowls for the library ice cream party, 2 new pillows for the porch chairs, a box of those coffee cups for the machine at work, 4 luna bars- one of which I ate on the way back to school, an assortment of small items for the school secretary as a little bon voyage bag for her trip to Scotland, a box of decaf tea, a bottle of sea foam green! ! nail polish, 3 packages of luncheon napkins in summer prints, and 2 bags of ghiradelli chips.

None of this would be on my shopping list- although I was searching for new pillows for the porch- but I still bought it all. Unfortunately there were no frames in the 2 sizes I need so …… a trip to A.C. Moore or Michaels will be on the horizon.

Tonight I squeezed in a moonlit walk with a delightful August breeze rustling the trees. Heavenly!
